September 30, 1850

CALIFORNIA DAILY COURIER, San Francisco, Sept. 30, 1850  A very rare & early newspaper from California which would last only until 1851. This is the volume 1, number 77 issue. The front page is mostly taken up with ads but does have 3 Acts of Congress one of which is signed in type by the President: Zachary Taylor, one for the "...negotiation of treaties with the Indian tribes in the Territory of Oregon, for the extinguishment of their claims to lands lying west of the Cascade Mountains..." (see).
Page 2 has news items including announcement of the printing of the "Steamer Courier" to be sent with those heading east, and also "From Sacramento" which reports of rising waters disrupting the mining operations. The bkpg. has: "The Tehuantepec Treaty" relating to the isthmus in Mexico which was the shortest distance between the Pacific & Gulf of Mexico--a critical issue during the Gold Rush.
Four pages, a bit irregular at the spine margin with tiny pin holes at the blank spine, small piece from an upper corner of the front leaf touches 2 letters on pg. 2, generally very nice. A rare opportunity for a California newspaper from the Gold Rush era.
