April 09, 1666

THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, April 9, 1666  A very early issue of the world's oldest continually published newspaper, having begun in 1666 and is still publishing today.
The issue is filled with various reports from throughout Europe, much of it military reporting. Datelines include Portsmouth, Plymouth, Lubeck, Stockholm, Hamburgh Dublin, Newcastle & elsewhere. The back page has an item from the King noting: "His Majesty taking into his princely consideration the hazardous consequences & perils which may ensue, by the extraordinary resort of people to the Houses of Parliament, should they assemble at teh time present, by which occasion the late Contagion (now by God's mercy almost totally abated) may be again increased..." and postponing Parliament as a consequence. Great to find reference to the Great Plague in a period newspaper.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, 6 3/4 by 10 3/4 inches, very slightly close-trimmed at the top of the bkpg. shaves a few letters, light toning to two margin, generally very nice, clean condition.
