THE PACIFIC NEWS, San Francisco, November 10, 1849

* California Gold Rush - 49ers
* Rare Old West title

A terrific & extremely early newspaper from California, this title being only the fourth newspaper to print in all of California. And it was printed before California statehood. There were only four newspapers which printed in Calif. in the 1840's. This issue is dated from the midst of the '49ers gold rush' with a front page report headed: "Successful Digging" which mentions: "We saw a man yesterday for the Middle Fork who has been at work but six weeks & in that time has turned out, with his own hands, $6500. He had one 'lump' weighing 27 1/23 ounces." A page 2 report: "From the Mining Region".
A red ink stamp in the left margin: "Forwarded by Adams' & Co's. Express". A great issue for display with this gold rush content on the front page, plus a nice political woodcut. This could well be the earliest California newspaper you will be able to add to your collection, being the first from the 1840's we have offered in over ten years.
Four pages, 8 3/4 by 13 inches, never bound nor trimmed, some wear & foxing at the folds, minor margin wear. Some discrete archival mends at the spine.
