February 21, 1861

THE KANSAS STATE JOURNAL, Lawrence, Feb. 21, 1861

* Kansas becomes a state (1st report)
* Joins the Union of the United States
* Volume 1 Number 1 issue

Although this is the volume 1 number 1 issue & desired simply as such, its more significant interest is the great front page reporting of Kansas joining the Union as the 34th state. Statehood announcements are always desired by collectors and they don't get much better than in a newspaper from the state joining the Union.
Over half of the newspaper is taken up with the full text of the: "Constitution of the State of Kansas", plus the entire first column is headed: "THE STATE OF KANSAS ! " which lists the principal officers, the governor, treasure, etc., the names of the Supreme Court, the District Judges, and the Legislature (see). Perhaps of most significance is the print of the formal document admitting Kansas to the Union headed: "ACT OF ADMISSION" "An Act for the Admission of Kansas Into the Union" which is dated January 29, 1861, the formal date of admission.
Page 2 has a nice editorial on this as well headed: "The State of Kansas" beginning: "At last Kansas has been permitted to enter upon her careen of Empire. Her admission into the Union after six years of earnest petitioning..." with much more.
Four pages, archivally rejoined at the spine, some light foxing, mild wear at the margins. An extremely significant & rare issue with this notable statehood content on the front page.
