July 29, 1667

THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, July 29, 1667

* Treaty of Breda signing
* Second Anglo-Dutch war ends
* New York - New Jersey - Delaware

The back page has a very notable report datelined "Breda, Aug. 2" which announces the signing of the Treaty of Breda. The report notes: "On Sunday night...the Plenipotentiaries abound 9 in the evening signed the Articles of Peace; which done, Monsieur Fleming, the Swedish Mediator...congratulated the happy issue of so great a work; after which the Plenipotentiaries saluting & complimenting each other, the Conference ended. As they came out of the Castle, the canons were thrice discharged round the town, the Musqueteers giving their volleys from the works, and the horse drawn up upon the Plain saluting them with their trumpets, the whole town quitting their houses to express their joy to them as thy past by."
The Treaty of Breda had far-reaching consequences in Europe, but its significance to American history is that England received New Netherlands, being present-day New York and New Jersey (see hyperlink).
