April 15, 1841
THE GLOBE, Washington, D.C., April 15, 1841 Page one has under "To The People Of The United States", a recommendation by new President John Tyler for a day of fasting and prayer from in response to the death of President William Henry Harrison. It states, in part: "When a Christian people feel themselves to be overtaken by a great public calamity, it becomes them to humble themselves under the dispensation of Divine Providence…", and continues with...", and continues with, "…to the end that on that day we may all with one accord join in humble and reverential approach to Him in whose hands we are, invoking Him to inspire us with a proper spirit and temper of heart and mind under these frowns of His providence and still to bestow His gracious benedictions upon our Government and our country.” Singed in block type, John Tyler.
Other news of the day, advertising, and reports of events which provide context for this difficult time in U.S. history abound.
Complete in four pages, lite damp-staining in the upper right corner, but otherwise very good. Terrific to have this proclamation in a Washington, D.C. newspaper.
