THE NEW YORK TIMES, July 2, 1937
* Reverend Martin Niemöller arrested
* Ant-Nazi theologian and Lutheran pastor
* Famous "First they came..." statement fame
The front page has a one column heading: "NAZIS FINALLY PUT NIEMOELLER IN JAIL" with subheads that include: "Accuse Pastor of Slandering Notables and Calling for Opposition to Laws" "Court Trial Awaits Him" and more. (see) 1st report coverage on anti-Nazi theologian, Reverend Martin Niemöller, arrest by Heinrich Himmler's Gestapo in Berlin, Germany.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 44 pages, minor margin wear, generally nice.
Note: While Reverend Niemöller was already well-known, he is currently best-known for his famous quote regarding his arrest:
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
Since this quote did not come until much later in his life, it is not within this newspaper report.
