THE NEW YORK TIMES, February 15, 1942

* First ever New York Times crossword puzzle

This is the Sunday edition and is complete with all 8 sections. But certainly the most notable section is #7, done in tabloid-size format.
A staple of the Sunday Times for the past 60+ years has been its famous crossword puzzle, and this magazine section has the very first ever created (see photos). Page 36 actually contains two puzzles, and there is a box in the lower right corner which notes the beginning of what would become a distinguished tradition: "Beginning today, the New York Times inaugurates a puzzle page. There will be two puzzles each Sunday--one with a flavor of current events and general information, and one varied in theme, ranging from puzzles in a lighter vein, like today's smaller one, to diagramless puzzles of a general nature..." with more (see photos).
You get not only the complete 40 page Magazine Section but the entire newspaper of this date. And this issue is the "rag edition" printed on very high quality newsprint meant for institutions. The Magazine and entire issue are both in great condition. There are tiny binding holes at the top of the Magazine  and Book Review sections (sections 6 and 7) as well as the spine of the balance of the issue where once bound into a volume for the month and held by a library.
A rare opportunity for a notable issue desired by puzzle collectors as a keystone issue for any such collection.
