THE WAR, New York, Jan. 4, 1813

* Alexander Smythe vs. Peter B. Porter
* Bloodless duel - War of 1812

The front page begins with a report headed: "Duel", providing the details of duel fought between Gen. Smyth and Gen. Porter after the latter charged the former with cowardice in battle. This is a fascinating incident, reported in Wikipedia: "...After the failed attack on Canada, Smyth was insulted by Brigadier General Peter B. Porter, who accused Smyth of cowardice. Smyth challenged Porter to a duel, but both men went unscathed...". The balance of the ftpg., and a bit of pg. 2, are taken up General Porter's account of the attack on Canada, although considerably toned down from what he was planning on reporting (see his introductory paragraph). It is signed by him in type: Peter B. Porter.
Also in this issue: "Naval Heroism Rewarded" concerns Captain Hull. Also: "Naval Dinner" in honor of Capt. Hull, Commodore Decatur, & Capt. Jones, with a list of toasts & much detail.
Four pages, 9 3/4 by 12 1/4 in., never-trimmed margins, very nice, clean condition.

This is a fascinating, short-lived newspaper, having begun in 1812 with the exclusive purpose of reporting on the War of 1812 (hence the title). When the war ended, so did this newspaper.
