THE NEW YORK TIMES, May 24, 1939
* USS Squalus (Sailfish) sinking disaster
* Submarine test dive off New Hampshire
The front page has four column headline: "59 AWAIT RESCUE ON SUNKEN SUBMARINE 240 FEET DOWN NEAR PORTSMOUTH, N. H.; CONTACT RESTORED AFTER 10-HR. BREAK" with subheads and photo. Much more inside. Loads of text. Always nice to have notable events in history reported in this World famous publication.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 48 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. A little residue along the spine from disbinding, otherwise in very nice condition.
