November 19, 1942

THE NEW YORK TIMES, November 19, 1942

* Collyer Brothers
* Bizarre & compulsive hoarding

Page 27 has two column headings: "Collyers Pay Off $6,700 Mortgage As Evictors Smash Way Into Home"
"Front Window of Harlem's 'Haunted House' Is Broken After Locksmiths and Sheriff Fail at Doors --Dust Chokes the 'Invaders'"
with related photo. (see) First report coverage on the Collyers Borthers, famous New York City hoarders, finally paying off their Fifth Avenue Harlem brownstone home. Always nice to have notable events in history reported in this World famous publication, especially on this topic. I suspect this is one of the few publications to report this particular event.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day with much on World War II. Complete in 48 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Nice condition.
