NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, Sept. 20, 1817 The most significant content in this issue is a complete printing of the: "Constitution--State of Mississippi" which takes almost 4 1/2 pages. Mississippi would become the 20th state of the union on Dec. 10, 1817, one of the requirements before statehood being an effective & approved constitution, hence this formal printing less than 3 months before formal designation as a state.
Also in this issue is a lengthy article: "The Late Robert Fulton" with much on his life taking over 3 pages. Also: "Sea Serpents" which begins: "It being now an admitted fact...that monstrous fishes, or the serpent kind, inhabit the sea...", and other items.
Sixteen pages, 6 1/4 by 9 1/2 inches, lite scattered foxing, very good condition.
This small size newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the 19th century. As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
