THE SPRINGFIELD UNION, Springfield, Massachusetts, August 9, 1958 The front page carries a four-column, two-line headline "A-SUB OPENS POLAR ROUTE FROM PACIFIC TO ATLANTIC" with subhead "Nautilus Cruises 2114 Miles Under North Pole Ice in Historic Voyage; Commercial, Military Possibilities Cited; Skipper Decorated by President". "The United States atomic submarine Nautilus has crossed the top of the world, steaming swiftly and silently under the eternal ice of the North Pole...". This includes a small map "Historic Route of Nautilus" and a photo "Nautilus On History-Making Polar Voyage" as well.
An additional article "A-Sub Skipper's Calm Is Unruffled by Feat - But 37-Year-Old Comdr. Anderson Is 'a Little Bit Dazed' by Celebration" is on the front page which includes a small photo of the commander.
