August 06, 1803

COLUMBIAN CENTINEL & MASSACHUSETTS FED4RALIST, Boston, Aug. 6, 1803  Page 2 has: "...That part of the cession of Louisiana which stipulates that New Orleans shall be a free port for France & Spain...is a serious subject for Congress to deliberate upon; for Great Britain if the treaty is so ratified will not be on a footing with the most favoured nation. The calling of Congress therefore, is very proper step...". Further on is an intriguing note: "...extolling the wisdom of Mr. Jefferson in adding eleven millions of dollars to the funded debt of the United States. Great clamour was raised against the administration of Mr. Adams because he did not effect a greater reduction of the national debt...Now in a time of profound tranquility the national debt is to be increased fifteen millions of dollars in one year, for the purchase of a country most of which is uninhabited and totally useless to the United States." My, how a few centuries has changed that perspective!
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, some foxing, very nice condition.
