November 07, 1874

HARPER'S WEEKLY, New York, November 7, 1874

* Famous 1st Republican elephant print
* Thomas Nast illustration
* Winslow Homer print

The full front page is a Thomas Nast political cartoon: "A Tammany Rat", but certainly the most significant print in this issue is another full page Thomas Nast political cartoon titled: 'The 3rd term Panic' which shows the Republican elephant for the first time. Thomas Nast was the creator of both the Republican elephant and the Democratic donkey, as well as the modern version of Santa Claus.
Other prints include a doublepage centerfold of: "German Emigrants for New York Embarking on a Hamburg Steamer" plus there is a full page Winslow Homer print titled: 'Camping in the Adirondack Mountains'.
A very significant issue on two accounts, complete in 20 pages. Nice condition.
