THE NEW YORK TIMES, September 28, 1938

* Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain
* Appeasement speech re. Adolph Hitler's aggression
* Pre World War II tensions growing in Europe

The front page has a six column headline: "ROOSEVELT APPEALS AGAIN TO HITLER AS HOP WANES; REICH SETS ATTACK FOR SATURDAY, DENIES NEW DEADLINE; BRITAIN MOBILIZES NAVY, CHAMBERLAIN MAKES FINAL PLEA" with subheads. Much reporting on the growing tensions in Europe. Included is Neville Chamberlain's speech on "Appeasement" in which he famously said: "How horrible, fantastic, incredible it is that we should be digging trenches and trying on gas masks here because of a quarrel in a far-away country between people of whom we know nothing"
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 52 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Nice condition.
