NEW-YORK DAILY TIMES, April 6, 1853

* Harriet Beecher Stowe recognized for her contribution to the abolitionist cause
* "Uncle Tom's Cabin"
* Stafford House convention

Most are aware "Uncle Tom's Cabin", upon its release, was embraced by abolitionists but enraged most of those from the South and Northern supporters of slavery. However, few are aware that it was exceeding popular in England - the first London edition appearing in May, 1852, which sold over 200,000 copies (an amazing number for the era). With this as the backdrop...

The New-York Daily Times reprinted an article originally published in the London Times which provides significant details of a convention held in her honor at the famed Stafford House, London. These details are best read in full (see images for the coverage).
Great to have this early, contemporary report which pays homage to Harriet Beecher Stowe, and the positive impact "Uncle Tom's Cabin" had regarding the abolitionist movement throughout the world.
Other news of the day and period advertising are also present.

This is an 8 page issue, and although the article is in very good condition, the issue itself has numerous, clean, archival mends and stains throughout - none of which impact the key article.

Help: The above mentioned article references a letter from a large group of Englishwomen, addressed to the women of America, which was to be printed in P.T. Barnum's Illustrated News. Although we have searched through many issues of the Illustrated News for this period, we have yet to unearth this letter. If anyone knows the date of this issue, we would be much obliged if you could let us know.
