May 07, 1862
THE CRISIS, Columbus, Ohio May 7, 1862 By far the most fascinating report is on the back page headed: "Mrs. Lincoln's Brother Dead". He was a Confederate soldier, and nice to find the report in this title as it reads in part: "...died on the battle field of Shiloh...was a gallant private in the Crescent regiment & died in defence of his country against the hireling invaders whom the husband of his sister, Abraham Lincoln, sent to desolate our country and dishonor our people."
Other Civil War reports in the issue are: "Battle of Pea Ridge" "War News of the Week" "Down with Abolitionism" "The Test of Loyalty" "A Scene on the Battle Field" and much more.
Eight pages, minor foxing, nice condition.
Described as "The Hottest Rebel Sheet to be found in the North or the South", it opposed the war and attracted the hatred of the Republicans and the Lincoln administration. It insisted that slavery could not be prohibited by law. So obnoxious was this paper to Unionists that it was denied circulation in some cities. In 1863 the press was raided by a hateful mob. This 8 page newspaper contains news of the day and interesting advertisements throughout. Very rare pro Confederate newspaper from the North with news. Nice condition.
