March 27, 1766
THE PENNSYLVANIA JOURNAL & WEEKLY ADVERTISER, Philadelphia, March 27, 1766.

* The hated Stamp Act
* Much coverage
* Colonial Pennsylvania original

A very nice feature of this issue is the very decorative engraving in the masthead (see photos) showing an Indian and an angel along side an open "Journal", with other embellishments.

The entire front page is taken up with reports from Parliament concerning America including a speech by the King which begins:

* When I met you last I acquainted you that matters of importance had happened in America, which would demand the most serious attention of parliament..."
and further on is: "...to issue orders to the governors of my provinces & to the commanders of my forces in America for the exertion of all the powers of government in the suppression of riots & tumults & in the effectual support of lawful authority...

with so much more.

The "...riots & tumults..." mentioned are obviously concerning the hated Stamp Act which was enacted in 1765 and would be repealed in this year of 1766.

This is evidenced by another front page item headed "North Carolina" which includes: "...are ready & willing at the expense of our lives & fortunes to defend, being fully convinced of the oppressive & arbitrary tendency of a late act of parliament imposing stamp duties on the inhabitants of this province & fundamentally subversive of the liberties & charters of North America..." with more (see).

With the entire front page dealing with America & the ornate masthead, what a perfect issue for display!

Page 2 has further reporting concerning the Stamp Act with one report from New York including: "...that I hope for no less than a total repeal of the oppressive acts which since have become more evident by the debates of the house..."  with more (see).

Pages 2 & 3 have other items on the Stamp Act, but more interesting is the report--set in larger type than the rest of the issue--which announces:

* A Brig from Cork is arrived at Oxford in Maryland who brought a Cork Paper of the 6th of February in which is a Letter from a Member of Parliament in London to his Friend in Ireland dated the 28th of January, the Substance of which Letter is, 'That every Thing relative to the Affairs of America were settled, THE STAMP ACT REPEALED, and Requisitions to be made to the respective Colonies for the Support of the American Establishments."
which is followed by: "The above agreeable news was received here with the greatest joy imaginable & gladness was painted in the face of every person that was to be seen...

The only problem is that the report was premature. History notes that the King didn't sign the repeal of the Stamp Act until March 18.

Related text carries over to take more than one-third of pg. 3 as well, portions seen in the photos below. The bkpg. is entirely taken up with ads save for: "A PROCLAMATION" signed in type by William Franklin, governor of New Jersey (and Ben Franklin's son).

Complete in 4 pages and in very nice, clean condition. There is archival strengthening partially down the inside gutter, and just a bit of wear near the bottom right margin. An handsome display issue with a wealth of fine content.
