THE LONDON CHRONICLE, London, England, December 23, 1777
* George Washington is captured ?
* Washington to be replaced ?
* Revolutionary war original from the enemy
Page 2 has a report which includes: "Ever since Gen. Howe landed in America it has been his aim to...ensnare our army...On Long Island, at New York, Kingsbridge & the White Plains, the enemy tried their utmost efforts to hem in our army...Our brave general was aware of his intrigues...His aim was to get Gen. Washington in the trap he is now in himself; where, in case of a defeat, he has no safe retreat..." with more (see).
Another pg. has items on the war including: "...an account that Gen. Washington, flushed with the success of Arnold, had attacked Gen. Howe who received him very coolly, killed 3000, & the residue of the Americans were either taken prisoners or laid down their arms & that Gen. Washington was amongst the prisoners..." (see).
Another page has a full column editorial concerning the war in America (see).
Yet another page has other war items including: "...positive & direct assurances that the French ministry, through the mediation of Dr. Franklyn [sic] are entering into a treaty with the British colonies in America." Also: "That the American forces which surrounded the remains of General Burgoyne's army were hastily brought together...Gen. Lincoln is gone to join Gen. Gates...I hope the whole of Gen. Burgoyne's army will be in our hands..." with more (see).
There is some great Revolutionary War content on the back page as well, including:
* ...previous to general Burgoyne's capitulation, a number of prisoners who made their escape from Ticonderoga gave such an account of the strength of the fort as induced general Gates to send a detachment...to take possession of it..." with much more. Also: "...four days before general Burgoyne capitulated he dispatched a body of Indians...that 50 of the party were taken by the rebels...
Also: "...When he left Albany, general Gates with the army, was still there, & it was given out was to join general Washington..." and "...accounts...of the reduction of Mid Island and Red bank on the Delaware by his Majesty's troops under...General Sir Wm. Howe...a considerable number of the latter department had declared a resolution of having Mr. Washington removed from the command of their army & requesting that Mr. Greene...should succeed Mr. Washington as Generalissimo." (see photos).
A wealth of great reading, complete in 8 pages, 8 1/2 by 11 inches.
Slightly close-trimmed at the top of a few pages but not affecting any of the text. Otherwise very nice condition.
