THE PENNSYLVANIA PACKET AND THE GENERAL ADVERTISER, Philadelphia, November 9, 1772

* Rare Colonial Pennsylvania original
* Nice masthead

A volume II issue of this famous title that has ornate lettering and a nice engraving of a ship in the masthead.

Notable content begins on the front page with an essay "On Idleness". This compelling essay begins: "The Jews have a saying among them, that 'he who does not bring his son up in business makes him a thief.'" Idleness they look on as the ground of all evil, whether public or private...", and more taking most of the first column (see).

There is also letter that discusses the " ...quick advancement this young city hath made in luxury." The letter then opines: "This pernicious distemper not only discovers itself in people of high rank amongst us, but is infecting the those of an inferior class. The young and the gay of both sexes are contending who shall make the best figure, and engage the public admiration of most..." and much more, the letter is signed in type: Simplicius Honestus (see).

An ad reads: "Wanted Immediately, Either to purchase or hire, A White or Negro Boy..."  There is also a notice offering a reward for a stolen horse, and one offering a reward for two runaway servants, each with an engraving.

Page 2 news from "New-York" says that Mrs. Wright, a noted portrait artist in London, has sent to her home in the city "...the most striking likeness of the celebrated Dr. Franklin, of Philadelphia, now in London..."

And pg. 3 has a notice offering a reward for a runaway servant that includes an engraving. Some news and other content on each of these pages as well.

The back page has two more notices offering rewards for runaways, one for "...a Negro Fellow named London...", each with an engraving of a runaway.

This issue also has an attached single sheet supplement containing all ads and notices. The front page has an ad for a dry goods business that has an atypically large engraving of a spinning wheel, while the bkpg. has another reward notice for a runaway servant that includes an engraving of a runaway.

Has six pages, including the supplement, issue is rejoined at the spine and inside at fold with a masking tape, has two archival mends at the spine and one in the lower margin of the first leaf, some lite foxing in a few places. Untrimmed.
