THE SALEM OBSERVER, Massachusetts, Nov. 24, 1838 Page 2 has an article headed: "The Mormon War" which includes: "...that the Mormons, intimidated by the large body of men who had assembled to oppose them, had surrendeered to Gen. Atchison without firing a gun; that Joe Smith, the prophet, and two or three more of the ringleaders, were to be taken to Jefferson City & the rest...were to be marched without the bounds of the state...fear4se that the disturbances had not terminated so amicably as reported...intelligence that a party of Mormons...were attacked by the volunteers under the command of Gen. Lucas & 22 of them were killed...". (see)
