April 18, 1888
SOUTHWEST SENTINEL, Silver City, New Mexico, April 18, 1888 This is a very scarce newspaper from the territory of New Mexico, 24 years before statehood, and is a volume one issue as well.
Silver City was one of several mining town in New Mexico. The town's violent crime rate was substantial during the 1870s. Grant County Sheriff Harvey Whitehill gained a reputation for his abilities at controlling trouble. In 1875 Whitehill became the first lawman to arrest Billy the Kid, in fact arresting him twice, both times for theft in Silver City. He would later claim that Billy the Kid was quite likable, whose stealing was a result more of necessity than criminality.
Various news of the day, but most of the issue is taken up with typically Western-style ads, several illustrated (see). Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, light browning at upper folds, uncommonly nice condition.
A terrific opportunity for a rare & early title from territorial New Mexico.
