NILES' NATIONAL REGISTER, Baltimore, Feb. 14, 1846 The back page has an interesting article with a small head: "Mormons" which is concerning their plan to head West. Bits include: "...announces that they design to send out from thence into the western country, early in March...a company of young men, pioneers, with some families...who are to proceed to some spot near the Rocky Mountains, there halt, make a crop & remain until a final residing place be selected for a location..." with more (see). A significant report on their plans which would ultimately take them to the Great Salt Lake area.
Other items within this issue include the entire front page taken up with: "Shall We Have Peace Or War", relating to the Mexican War. Also: "Appointments By the President" "Army Journal", reports from Congress, "Mr. Adams' Speech on Oregon" "The President's Message" which has letters signed by both James K. Polk and James Buchanan, and other items as well.
Sixteen pages, 8 1/2 by 12 inches, great condition.
This newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the 19th century. As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
