BINGLEY'S JOURNAL, London, England, July 6, 1771 The Regulator movement was a North Carolina uprising, beginning 1764 and culminating in 1771, where citizens took up arms against corrupt colonial officials. While unsuccessful, some historians consider it a catalyst to the American Revolutionary War.
The back page has an article which includes: "...a letter from Newbern, in North-Carolina, dated April 24...Our governor, at the head of 2500 men, is going against the regulators; the Craven & Cartwright County detachments march to-morrow...It is very agreeable to every well-wisher to government to see the people so unanimous in joining without the assistance of regular troops, to suppress those miscreants who have so long disturbed the tranquility of this province."
The front page has an article: "Respecting the Liberty of the Press" which takes over a full column (see). This event was instrumental in what most historians agree was the 1st shedding of blood related to the quest for American Freedom & Independence, which occurred only 22 days later - to be known as the Battle of Alamance.
Complete in four pages with a partial red ink tax stamp in the lower right corner. Nice condition.
