NEW YORK TIMES, May 21, 1862  Among the front page column heads on the Civil War: "The Advance Against Richmond" "Our Army Making Good Progress" "Gen. Stoneman at Cold Harbor on Monday Night" "Our Army Less Than Ten Miles from the Rebel Capital" "Official Reports of the Late Battle at Drury's Bluff" "News From  New Orleans to the 8th" "Porter's Mortar Fleet Preparing to Attack Mobile" "Particulars of the Evacuation of Pensacola" and more.
Fine, war-related content inside as well, including two articles concerning General Hunter's very controversial Order No. 11, in which he declared free slaves in Georgia, South Carolina, & Florida, angering President Lincoln. One article begins: "The Proclamation of the President [revoking Hunter's Order] continues to be the prominent topic in all circles here to-day. Excerpting a few extremists on both sides, all unite in singing praise of the wisdom & foresight of the Chief Magistrate. Gen. Hunter will not be recalled, the President considering that, with his unequivocal condemnation of Hunter's action, and a complete revocation thereof, the public interest has been sufficiently vindicated and regarded...".
The other related article is a nearly 1 1/2 column editorial: "Slavery and the Rebellion--The President's Proclamation".
Eight pages, very nice condition.
