THE NEW YORK TIMES, May 30, 1863 Among the many front page column heads on the Civil War are: "The Siege of Vicksburg" "Dispatches from Gen. Grant..." "Everything then Progressing Satisfactorily" "Our Forces Abundantly Able to Maintain the Investment" "General Banks Said to be Coming Up the Mississippi" "The Latest Rebel Reports" "Affairs In Tennessee" and more.
The back page has a significant report headed: "First Massachusetts Colored Regiment" which begins: "The fifty-fourth regiment of Massachusetts volunteers, composed of colored men of this & other northern states, took its departure for the field of active service to-day. This is the pioneer colored regiment raised in the northern states..." with much more. Included is the list of officers including: "Colonel--Robert C. Shaw". The article takes close to a full column.
Eight pages, some small margin tears and minor edge chipping.
