September 21, 1919
SPRINGFIELD SUNDAY REPUBLICAN, Massachusetts, Sept. 21, 1919  A great baseball issue for at least two reasons. The sports page has a banner headline reading: "Babe Ruth Clouts 27th Home run--Gaston Chevrolet Makes Record--Local Golfers Find Hartford Easy" plus the two column subhead reads: "Ruth's 27th Circuit Clout Cheats Chisox of Pennant" and further one column head: "Babe Sends Ball Over Left Field Fence in Ninth of First Game, Fattening Record". The text also mentions that: "...It was 'Babe' Ruth day at Fenway park..." as this was his last game at Fenway Park as a member of the Boston team.
But better yet is the very large montage of photographs on this same page showing players from the Chicago White Sox and Cincinnati Reds teams who would participate in the 1919 World Series, which would turn out to be the most scandalous in baseball history as many Chicago players would be implicated in a plot to throw the Series. Several notable photos include Joe Jackson, Eddie Collins, manager Kid Gleason, and more (see).
The complete issue, very nice condition.
