THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, July, 1757  A very nice magazine from during the French & Indian War from the "mother country" with a wide range of varied content including news of the day, political reports, literary items, and other unusual tidbits. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
The prime feature of this issue would be it's state: it still has the original blue/green outer wrappers just as it was sold to the subscribers over 250 years ago--and in great condition. Very rare to find as such as wrappers were almost always removed when bound into annual volumes. Never trimmed as well, so original deckle edge with wide margins. The outer wrapper also has a engraving of St. John's Gate (see).
Another feature of this issue is a nice full page map titled: "A Map of the Mouths of the Ganges in the Bay of Bengal showing the English Settlements lately Destroy'd by the Nabob of that Province". This map measures 5 1/4 by 8 1/4 inches.
Among other items in this issue are: "Happy Effects of a Dream" "Of the Sleep of Plants" "Case of a Man who Swallowed melted Lead" which includes an illustration (see); "Earthquake at Manila" and more.
Near the back is the: "Historical Chronicle" with news events of the day including a report from Philadelphia which talks about various items including some on the French & Indian War. Included is: "...General Webb has the care of the frontiers in New York towards Crown Point. One battalion of Royal Americans & 4 independent companies of rangers & perhaps the New York & Jersey troops have the same destination. Col. Stanwix of the Royal Americans will command to the westward of this province..." and more (see).
The other plate called for is lacking.
Complete in 46 pages, measures 5 by 8 1/4 inches with a full title/contents page which features an engraving of St. John's Gate.
