June 19, 1940
THE STAR, Guernsey, Channel Islands, June 19, 1940 This island, and several others, were occupied by the Nazis during most of World War II, their closest approach to the British Isles. During the latter part of June, 1940, as it was apparent Nazi occupation was to happen before long (began around July 1), Guernsey decided to evacuate children and their mothers to England. This issue reports on this event, with several banner headlines: "ISLAND EVACUATION" "All Children To Be Sent To Mainland Tomorrow' "Mothers May Accompany Those Under School Age" "REGISTRATION TONIGHT" "WHOLE BAILIWICK TO BE DEMILITARISED" "Strong Advice To meet Between 20 and 33". Also ftpg. reports of refugees from France arriving on Guernsey.
