THE PENNSYLVANIA MERCURY & UNIVERSAL ADVERTISER, Philadelphia, May 27, 1788 A rather uncommon title from late 18th century Philadelphia. Page 3 has a report from Wilmington, North Carolina concerning a dinner with various toasts, listing 13, including those to "General Washington, Doctor Franklin, the Friends of liberty, the Federal Club..." and more.
Page 3 also haws a report headed: "Celebration--on the Seventh Pillar's being Raised", meaning that Maryland has become the 7th state to ratify the Constitution, or the "federal edifice". The report begins: "On Thursday last, upon receipt of the agreeable intelligence of the ratification of the NEW CONSTITUTION by the state of Maryland, a number of patriotic citizens assembled..." and gave many toasts, 13 of which are listed (see). This is followed by: "...little doubt may be had but the proposed Constitution will be ratified by the Convention of this state [N.H.] at their next meeting..." (see).
Four pages, 9 1/4 by 11 inches, great condition.
