NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington, December 4, 1849 The front page has a brief article: "The Sandwich Islands" which provides one person's perspective on the widespread death that had befallen many (most) of the indigenous people of the region: "The immediate cause of this rapid decrease [death] may be explained in many ways.
