THE EDINBURGH ADVERTISER, Scotland, Jan. 31, 1775
* The Intolerable Acts
* Petition for repeal
* Revolutionary war prelude
The entire front page and much of page 2 are taken up with the petition to the King of England from the First Continental Congress asking for a repeal of the hated Coercive Acts (see the hyperlink for more on this & the full texts). Certainly one of the more historic documents which would lead to the Revolutionary War, it delineates the list of grievances with England, notes the reasons for attention, and offers concluding thoughts which restate the ultimate goal of the petition while reaffirming the colonies' loyalty to the British monarchy.
The petition is headed: "The Following is a True Copy of the Petition of the American Congress to the King, Published by Order of the Congress. William Bollan, Benjamin Franklin, Arthur Lee. Philadelphia, Oct. 26, 1774". At the conclusion of this historic document is the list of names of each who signed, looking like a "who's who" of notes of the period, including Sam & John Adams, Patrick Henry, George Washington, John Dickinson, John Jay & many others (see).
There are a few other bits concerning America & England but they pale in comparison to this significant petition.
Eight pages, 8 3/4 by 11 inches, great condition.
